RESIDUE ON THE WALLS AND CEILING AND CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT TO PAINT OVER
Smoke damage can come from multiple sources: candles, a small fire or cigarette smoke. All leave residue on the walls and ceiling and can be very difficult to paint over. It will take multiple steps in order to prepare the walls for painting.
Step one: Dry cleaning. Using a soot sponge start at the top and work your way down. The sponges are made of a vulcanized rubber that absorbs the residue in their spores.
Step two: Wet cleaning. Using TSP cleaner start at the top and work down the walls. After you have wiped the walls with TSP use a clean sponge and warm water to remove any cleaning product from the walls.
Step three: Zinsser makes a product called B-I-N Primer which will cover up any stains or residue that may be left on the walls. If you don’t prime the walls the stains may bleed through the new paint and you will be right back where you started.
Step four: Now that you have cleaned and prepped the walls you can start with your painting project. It may have taken longer to get started but being able to get rid of both the stains on the walls and potentially the smells that go along with it.
